Sketch Book C

So for my Sketch Book C I choose to do the current social issue of the brutality that black people, especially transgender POC face every day. 


At first I wanted to do the two people wrapped up in a transgender pride flag, but after looking at my reference photos I decided to do one person because I was inspired by them. 



This is my final product. 
I decided on the slogan because it's the front slogan for the movement.  It is straight to the point and leaves no room for argument, because black trans lives do matter. The overall design for this is taken from my second reference photo. I added the surgery scars and skirt as a way to show gender fluidity and gender expression. I also cut out the photo and glued it too a black piece of paper just to add more of an abstract feel to it, and also the lines just to add more emphasis to the overall design. The design have been overused but it's a good design and it can be seen in many different fonts, and different artists have a different take on this design, but it gets the message across.

Pattern Progress

 For my pattern I was inspired by the rainforest. Its so full of life and there are so many patterns to get from it that I just had to do it. I choose a more plant based pattern because when I think of rain forest I think of greenery and the vast amount of plant species found there.  I had to include this unique plant, because look at it. Who wouldn't kiss those lips?  I did my motifs centered around these pics, I made it so some of the elements were overlapping, because of how dense this habitat is. I wanted to make it so the design was cluttered but not too cluttered.  The plants I choose are what I found most associated with the rain forest. The ferns and leaves, also the pretty flowers. I also did a leopard print with it, because I wanted to add a bit of an animal aspect to the pattern, but this pattern was mostly centered around the plants.  I played around with the sizing and decided that I liked the first one better, it was a bit clearer and more towards what I was going for

Final Assignment

 At first I did some idea/ concept sketches. I got the feel of what I wanted this book to look like.  Then I did some story boarding. I listened to the song that I wanted to do over and over again. Then I laid out more of the story. While doing this I thought of adding some pop ups to make the ship pop out, and the color scheme which would've been some darker colors contrasted against lighter colors. But I tried to keep it simple at the same time.  On the final product of this assignment I choose to do both gauche and color pencils.

Assignment 2 Progress

I choose to do an untitled work by artist Kerry James Marshall. What caught me about this piece is the darker colors, and lighter colors having a harmonious mix between each other. It's a very pleasing piece of art.  This artwork was hard to replicate, and I made many mistakes. I gave up on the canvas part of the painting because I didn't know really how to replicate it too so I splashed some colors together. Also I made the back ground brighter than it originally was.  When researching Kerry James Marshall I learned that he used painting, sculptural installations, collage, video, and photography to comment on the history of black identity in both the US and in Western Art. In the two works by Kerry James Marshall on the google slides he is using the color to show off that history.
